When supporting healthcare institutions and residential facilities, technology is key to making daily operations more efficient and user-friendly. However, integrating tablets into these environments can present a few challenges, such as power and data supply, and securing hardware against unauthorized use. We have developed a custom solution to address these needs, successfully assisting various care institutions.
Challenge 1: No Built-In Power Outlet Available
For a small-scale residential facility, we were asked to provide a wall-mounted tablet holder that could supply both power and data (internet) via Ethernet. However, the problem was that no built-in power outlet was available at the location where the tablet was to be mounted. Additionally, it was crucial to ensure that the hardware, including the tablet’s buttons, could not be accessed by unauthorized individuals.
The Solution: Custom Hardware Box with PoE Adapter
To tackle this challenge, we developed a custom hardware box. This box accommodates a PoE (Power over Ethernet) + data adapter, allowing both power and internet to be delivered to the tablet via a single Ethernet cable. The cable was neatly concealed through a small groove at the bottom of the box, ensuring a safe and tidy installation that is also tamper-proof. The tablet and all related hardware are fully protected against unauthorized use.
This solution has now been successfully installed in 16 homes within this residential facility, with excellent results. Residents and staff can easily access the tablet for various purposes, while the technical infrastructure remains safe and discreetly hidden.
Challenge 2: No Internet Required, But a Safe Power Supply Is Needed
In addition to the residential facility, we are also conducting a pilot with an organization that supports people with disabilities. Here, a similar issue arose: no built-in power outlet was available, but there was no need for internet. However, the challenge remained the same: the tablet had to be securely mounted with a stable power supply and protected from unauthorized access.
The Solution: Hardware Box for Safe Power Supply
For this situation, we again employed a custom hardware box. Instead of a PoE adapter, we ensured that a USB-C charging cable was connected to a power cable via an adapter, allowing easy connection to the power grid. Once again, we made sure the solution was robust, able to withstand rough handling, while fully protecting the hardware.
Results and Future Opportunities
Our custom solutions are not only efficient and secure but also scalable. The first installation across 16 homes has been successfully completed, and the pilot for the disability support organization is showing promising results. These projects demonstrate that there is a significant need within care institutions for secure, user-friendly wall-mounted tablet holders without requiring complex wiring or infrastructure modifications.
Since we can produce these solutions entirely in-house, we can quickly respond to new challenges and requests. This ability to offer customized solutions from our own production facility gives us a competitive advantage and allows us to deliver high-quality solutions without relying on external suppliers.
